Today I asked my students to write in their journals detailing what their lives will be like when they are 30. It was fantastic to read their responses! Three-quarters of my class said that they would be living in mansions. Most said they would be living in New York or California. Here is an exerpt from one student:
When I'm 30 or before, I would like to be a basketball player. I want to be a basketball player because I'm good at shooting and guarding. I want my house to be in LA because it is hot and rich people live there. I want ferrari for a car. I want to be rich when I'm 30. I'm going to have a wife and two children, too.
And another:
I would be thirty, flirty and thriving and be married to a boy named Chase. And have a kid and go shopping all the time. I love my kid and play with her all day! It would be fun to do all the time. To go to the spa and stuff like that would be so so so so so so fun to do. I love to get my hair done it is fun. I love to do a lot of things it is so fun. I love to do all the things I do and told you. Love to do anything girl and go to parties.
And another:
I'll be a cop when I'm 30. I will not live with my family. I will live by myself. And I will have my own canine, and my own pistol, and a machine gun. And I will live in a big tall house made of stone and brick. And I will have my own Ford Mustang with a siren on top of my police car. And I will have my mustang hubcaps. And my car will be white and black and blue. And I will go so fast, faster than a jet.
And another:
I will be a basketball player when I grow up. I won't live with my parents 'cause I'll practice every day. I will become famous and Lorenzo will be my dentist. (See Lorenzo's book). I'll play basketball as long as I can play. I'm gonna set the world's record for longest career of basketball. Then once I do that I'll probably retire. Then I'll find another job- maybe I'll be a book writer or something. I'm going to live in New York and take lots of hikes in Central Park.
One more:
If I was 30 I would buy tons of candy. I would go to the gym. My job would be a doctor or a teacher. I would live in Paris or Hawaii. I want 2 to 3 kids. I want to spoil my kids. I'll give them some candy. When it's Halloween and they're sleeping, I'll take all their candy, except if I don't like it. I'll buy an awesome car. I'll get a good job. We'll go to the beach every Friday. We'll live in a mansion. We'll be rich. I'll have a cute husband. He'll have a good job. He'll smile a lot. We'll go the gym every Tuesday. We'll have fun. I'll live in more places if I'm bored, and I'll live in Montana and other places. I'll have fun. I'll give one of my kids a horse or a bunny or a giraffe. Or a puppy or animal. The End.
The great thing about being a teacher is honestly telling these incredible kids that they can become whatever they want.
What will (or was) your life be like when you are thirty?

That is the best thing I have read in a long time! I love it Brynn. Congrats on getting married by the way. You looked beautiful!
The writing is expressive, detailed and much more imaginative than the kids in my second grade wrote. Probably that has something to do with literacy in the home. Most of my students were learning English as a second language and they were not very skilled in using Spanish which was their first language. Maybe it is just because your students have an awesome teacher.
